Workout Terms and Acronyms
Strokes
| Freestyle (FR) | Swimmer should swim Freestyle (Front crawl). |
| Backstroke (BK) | Swimmer should swim Backstroke. |
| Breaststroke (BR) | Swimmer should swim Breaststroke. |
| Butterfly (FL) | Swimmer should swim Butterfly. |
| Medley (IM) | Swimmer should swim Individual Medley. The individual medley is all four strokes together in the following order: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle (Front crawl). |
| Choice stroke (CH) | The swimmer may choose whichever stroke they wish, whether it is kick or pull, and can use any equipment as well. |
| Mixed strokes (MX) | The swimmer should swim a mixture of strokes. |

Effort Terms

| Easy (easy) | Easy swimming is smooth and relaxed while maintaining skill. This type of swimming is used as a form of recovery. |
| Moderate (mod) | Moderate swimming is an effort that has a slightly elevated heart rate, comfortable breathing, and is sustainable for prolonged swims. |
| Strong (strong) | Strong swimming is an effort of swimming that is at an elevated heart rate and heavy breathing. This form of swimming is uncomfortably sustainable. |
| Fast (fast) | Fast swimming is an effort at a maximum heart rate and can only be maintained up to a few minutes until muscular fatigue sets in. |
| Max (max) | Max (maximum) swimming is bouts of all-out effort. Max efforts are typically short swims or can be integrated as short bursts within longer swims. |
| Steady | Holding a specific intensity and speed for each interval in a subset. |
| Build | Increasing in intensity and speed within an interval, from slower to faster. |
| Descend | Decreasing your finish time, swimming each interval faster than the one before. |
