No! You don't need your phone nearby while you swim in order for the goggles to work. The goggles record your swim and then you can sync it to the FORM app on your phone at your convenience. 

Once you have completed your swim, select Save & Quit and power the goggles down. The swim will be saved on the goggles until you are ready to sync it across to the app for analysis.
